Travel advisors looking to boost their knowledge on Jamaica can focus on the island’s culturally and historically significant capital: Kingston.
Through the Jamaica Travel Specialist Program, advisors will dive deep into Kingston and learn about its Reggae roots and colonial heritage, and its museums, pirate past and arts scene. Once an advisor has completed the online training, they’ll be eligible to earn fantastic rewards under the OneLove Rewards program.
Located on Jamaica’s Southeast coast and backed by the Blue Mountains, Kingston rises above one of the harbour and serves as the island’s capital, cultural center and seat of government. The city is served by Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) and has notable attributes: it’s the largest English-speaking city in the Caribbean and home to the 7th largest natural harbour in the world.
Throughout the chapter, advisors will learn about attractions such as Port Royal, Jamaica’s pirate-era capital — once known as “the wickedest city in the world.” Now mostly under the sea, this city was home to thousands of buccaneers, including Henry Morgan, and was featured in the 2004 movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Now standing on Port Charles, visitors can get a glimpse of its past through the remaining artifacts recovered from the sunken city and a few of the remaining Georgian buildings.
Advisors can share the appeal of sites like Devon House, built in 1881, whose former stables and kitchens now house shops, restaurants and the famous Devon I Scream with their clients. Kingston is also known for its British Heritage, still evident with things like the changing of the guard ceremony, which takes place at the Jamaica War Memorial, as well as historic institutions like the Kingston Synagogue, the Ward Theater and the Kingston Parish Church.
Kingston has something to offer for all kinds of travellers. Art and music enthusiasts can enjoy The National Gallery of Jamaica, which showcases works by Jamaican artists from the 1920s, while the neighboring African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica offers insights of the island’s African heritage. Reggae fans can explore the Bob Marley Museum, which is located in his former home and recording studio, or take a guided tour through Trench Town, once home to legends like Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.
Kingston also has a strong selection of accommodations, including the Courtleigh Hotels & Suites, AC Hotel by Marriot Kingston, Altamont Court Hotel and the centrally located Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, alongside boutique properties like the Hotel Four Seasons, the Spanish Court Hotel and the Terra Nova All Suites Hotel. And just 30 minutes away, the Blue Mountains provide a refreshing escape, where clients can tour coffee plantations or relax at the Strawberry Hill Hotel & Spa.
Advisors who complete the program gain valuable knowledge about Kingston and all of Jamaica’s regions, while unlocking cash incentives, rewards points and exclusive discounts when they enroll in the OneLove Rewards program. Register today to become a Jamaica Travel Specialist.
