Dominican Republic Travel Guide

The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country located on the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola. It shares the island with Haiti to the west.

The Dominican Republic is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history. It's also famous for its music, dance, and delicious cuisine, which includes dishes like plantains, rice and beans, and various types of seafood.

Getting around the Dominican Republic is relatively easy, with various transportation options available. From our experience, here are some of the best ways of getting around:

  1. Taxis: Taxis are widely available in tourist areas and major cities and can be a convenient way to get around. However, negotiate the fare before getting into the taxi, as fares are not metered.
  2. Public transportation: Buses and "guaguas" (shared taxis or vans) are popular and affordable ways to get around the Dominican Republic. Be prepared for crowded conditions and longer travel times though.
  3. Motorbikes: If you're feeling adventurous, renting a motorbike can be a fun way to explore the country! Always wear a helmet and exercise caution. The road conditions can be unpredictable.

Important Things To Know

Currency

The local currency in the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso (DOP), abbreviated as RD$ or just $ in local businesses.

Tipping in the Dominican Republic is generally expected, especially in the service industry. Many workers in the tourism sector rely on tips as a significant part of their income, so it's always a good idea to show your appreciation for good service with a tip.

National Languages

The Dominican Republic's official language is Spanish. However, you will also find that many people in the tourism industry, especially in popular tourist areas, speak English.

Try to learn a few basic Spanish phrases. Some key phrases include "hola" (hello), "gracias" (thank you), "por favor" (please), and "¿cuánto cuesta?" (how much does it cost?).

In some areas, especially in smaller towns and villages, you may find that locals speak only limited English or no English at all. In these cases, having a basic understanding of Spanish can be very helpful.

Climate And Weather

The Dominican Republic has a tropical climate, which is warm and sunny year-round. On average, you can expect temperatures to be around 80°F (27°C).

Summer typically has higher temperatures while winters are only slightly cooler. So, pack light and comfortable clothes and prepare to soak up some sun!

We find the best time to visit the Dominican Republic is during the winter months, from December to February. During this time, temperatures are slightly cooler and more comfortable, with less humidity and a lower chance of rain.

However, the shoulder seasons of April to June and November can also be a great time to visit. These months offer a good balance of lower prices and smaller crowds while enjoying warm and pleasant weather.
