VIA Rail Canada marked a milestone this week, celebrating the 70th anniversary of The Canadian during an event at Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station.

The transcontinental train, which has connected travellers from Toronto to Vancouver since 1955, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most recognizable passenger rail journeys.

"For 70 years, The Canadian has given Canadians a chance to slow down and experience the beauty of this country in a way that no other journey can offer," said Mario Péloquin, president and CEO of VIA Rail.

"It has sparked countless memories: children seeing the mountains for the first time, families crossing the country to be together, strangers becoming friends over coffee in the Skyline car. Its legacy is carried not only by the steel of the rails, but by the people and the stories it connects."

The anniversary comes as VIA Rail moves forward with what it describes as the most significant modernization in its history. Backed by the federal government’s 2024 commitment to fund a new Pan-Canadian fleet, VIA launched a procurement process last year for new locomotives and passenger cars that will replace its Long-Distance, Regional and Remote fleet.

"Nowadays, people don't board the Canadian to get to where they need to go—it's about the journey, not the destination," VIA Rail stated in a blog commemorating the anniversary.

The corporation expects to confirm partners in early 2026. The long-term plan will see all VIA Rail trains renewed within the next decade.

According to a press release, increased ridership has been recorded thanks to the federal government’s Canada Strong Pass.

VIA Rail is highlighting the train’s history through a video series, alongside a Slow TV series.
