Montreal is no stranger to embracing winter, but this season, things are about to get a whole lot icier (in the best possible way).
Ice Castles recently announced plans to bring its frozen creations to Quebec for the first time.
The attraction will be built at Espace 67 in Parc Jean-Drapeau, in partnership with the park, giving residents and visitors a chance to explore a world made entirely of ice.
Ice Castles Montreal will include hand-sculpted tunnels, archways, towers and caverns, illuminated at night by colour-changing LED lights embedded within the ice.
"Montréal is one of the world's great winter cities, and we're proud to introduce Ice Castles here for the first time," said Kyle Standifird, CEO of Ice Castles.
"Parc Jean-Drapeau is an exceptional setting, and we can't wait to share this magical winter experience with Montrealers and visitors this coming season."
The attraction has an unusual origin story. In 2010, founder Brent Christensen began building a winter playground for his children in the front yard of their home in Alpine, Utah.
What started as a family project soon attracted crowds eager to explore the frozen creation. Christensen went on to develop the patented building process still used by Ice Castles today.
Each castle takes several weeks to construct, with teams of ice artisans growing, harvesting and placing tens of thousands of icicles by hand to create the towering structures.
Since its beginnings in Utah, Ice Castles has expanded to locations across North America. The Montreal installation will mark its first appearance in Quebec.
An official opening date has not yet been announced, as construction and opening timelines depend on winter temperatures and ice conditions.
Ice Castles Montreal will be located at Espace 67 at Parc Jean-Drapeau, 67 Chemin Macdonald.
Visitors can sign up for ticket announcements and opening updates at icecastles.com. A French-language website is also available.
