Air Transat’s labour dispute escalated early Sunday after the airline confirmed it had received a 72-hour strike notice from the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) — a move that could ground flights as early as Dec. 10.
As reported last week, 99% of Air Transat’s more than 700 unionized pilots voted to authorize strike action if necessary.
In a statement, Capt. Bradley Small, chair of the Air Transat Master Executive Council, said pilots “do not want to strike,” but argued they have been given "no choice.”
“There is still time to avoid a strike,” Small added, warning that unless meaningful progress is made before Wednesday, pilots will walk off the job “if that’s what it takes to achieve a modern contract.”
Air Transat Responds: ‘Gradual and Orderly Shutdown’ Planned
Air Transat posted an update to its website acknowledging the looming job action.
“The union representing our pilots has informed Air Transat of a strike notice on December 7, which may be exercised within 72 hours,” the airline said. “This means the strike could officially begin on December 10, and our flight operations will be disrupted until an agreement is reached.”
The airline said it is preparing a “gradual and orderly shutdown of operations over the next three days,” while emphasizing that negotiations remain ongoing.
“We understand that this situation may cause uncertainty and concern,” the update reads. “Our priority is to remain transparent, to support you, and to answer any questions you may have.”
Air Transat directed customers to tools including its cancellation form, Manage My Booking portal, and real-time flight status page.
Travellers are encouraged to download Air Transat's mobile app, ensure their contact information is up to date, and monitor updates closely.
Travellers at Risk of Disruption
The airline published an extensive FAQ for customers — including those currently at destination — addressing potential cancellations, rebooking options, and policies for flights, packages, Flex Option purchases, and additional services.
If a strike begins on Dec. 10, Air Transat said passengers could face flight cancellations and significant service impacts until a deal is reached.
