Montreal Woman Desperate for Answers as Cat Remains Missing at Toronto Pearson

A search is continuing at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) for a cat that has been missing for more than two weeks after disappearing while being transported on an international flight.

Abir Batikhi was travelling from Jordan to Canada aboard a Royal Jordanian Airlines flight on Aug. 17 with four cats, including her seven-year-old cat Caramel.

Batikhi told Global News that all four animals were secured in cages before the non-stop flight departed Jordan. But when she arrived in Montreal and collected the animals, something was wrong.

“I received the four cages. One cat was missing,” Batikhi told Global.

Caramel had somehow disappeared during the journey, and Batikhi says she still does not know how the cat managed to get out of the carrier.

According to reporting by CityNews, the Royal Jordanian aircraft landed at Toronto Pearson before continuing to Montreal. Batikhi was subsequently told Caramel had last been seen around Gates 29 or 30 in Pearson's Terminal 3, an area she described as secure and inaccessible to the public.

More than two weeks later, Caramel has not been found.

Batikhi has turned to social media in an effort to bring attention to the search, expressing fears about how long her cat can survive inside or around the airport.

“Please share this post with anyone who may be at or near Toronto Pearson Airport Every share could help bring Caramel home,” Batikhi wrote in a social media post last week. "The security at Pearson will not help me, they are not claiming responsibility for losing my pet, and are not actively helping to secure her with any food or traps
She was last seen at gate 29-30, a no public, secure area.

"I live in Montreal and am making a plea to the public to help spread the word. If anyone has contacts with news outlets, I would be grateful for assistance, as English is a second language for me."

Toronto Pearson confirmed to CityNews that the airport was notified about the missing cat by Royal Jordanian Airlines and that its wildlife team has been searching for Caramel.

Caramel is a white-and-orange short-haired cat and is microchipped.

CityNews reported that it contacted Royal Jordanian Airlines by email but had not received a response at the time of publication.

For Batikhi, the unanswered question remains how a cat that she says was secured inside a cage before departure could disappear somewhere between Jordan and Montreal, and where Caramel is now.
