Two nations are retaliating against President Donald J. Trump’s travel ban against Malian and Burkinabe citizens.

Both Mali and Burkina Faso have now banned US citizens from entering, effective immediately.

The travel ban on Mali and Burkina Faso as well as Niger was framed by Washington as a national security measure due to ongoing violence and the presence of armed extremist groups in the Sahel region and as a response to challenges in sharing reliable information about travelers from each nation.

The Western African nations cited the principle of reciprocity for the restrictions against American nationals.

Officials in Mali described their ban as a mirror of U.S. policy, saying they will now apply “the same conditions and requirements to U.S. nationals as those imposed on Malian citizens."

Burkina Faso’s foreign minister issued a similar statement, underscoring the tit-for-tat nature of the diplomatic standoff.
