Music, glamour, and a touch of the unexpected — Newfoundland's lively heart (downtown St. John’s) is where you'll find the JAG Hotel.
Part of the Steele Hotels portfolio, from its memorabilia-lined walls to the soundtrack that carries through its hallways, it hums with energy, while staying true to Newfoundland’s signature warmth.
Stepping into the lobby feels like a backstage pass. Guitars, gold records, and even a concert hall pulse with atmosphere, proving it’s not just about design — it’s an immersion in music.
If Dubai and Vegas had a lovechild, it would be ‘JAG’ — sophisticated, extravagant, and a little mischievous.
Blinged-out sofas, glowing ambient lights, and marble surfaces strut their stuff, while eclectic art and brass accents wink at you from every corner.
“It’s a passion project for the owner. He loves music, he loves Newfoundland and Labrador — so he built this hotel,” said Roger Barrow, VP of Sales at Steele Hotels, as he began our behind-the-scenes tour.

TravelPulse On Tour
Barrow cranked up the tour with a unique welcome. The concert hall screens lit up with TravelPulse Canada's logo, while the stage and hall glowed red and white in our honour — a small gesture that highlighted Steele Hotels’ commitment to creating experiences that feel both elevated and personal.

He spoke about the brand’s commitment to blending music, culture, and hospitality into a distinct experience.
“Guests tell us they feel like they woke up in Dubai or New York," Barrow said as he escorted us down hallways lined with the greats.
Incentive travel has found a new playground.
Barrow shares that the property is ideal for group bookings and events. “We’re seeing a lot more incentive travel. Instead of flying down south, groups are coming here, taking over the hotel as their reward destination. That’s becoming more common.”

JAG Turns Up the Volume
A recent expansion introduced a brand-new tower, Blues, connected by a pedway to the original building, Rhythm. Together, “Rhythm and Blues” is the power couple of harmony and design.
“Before, with 83 rooms, we were a boutique hotel. Now with 169, we’ve doubled in size — we want to be a conference hotel as well,” Barrow explained.
Beyond accommodations, the expansion is setting the stage for JAG to compete as a premier event destination in Newfoundland.
“Our conference space transforms into JAG Soundhouse — a 1,600-seat concert venue with pristine sound. Musicians tell us it’s the best they’ve ever played in, and guests say it’s the best they’ve ever heard,” said Barrow.

'Nothing Cookie Cutter'
“People say it’s like walking through an art gallery. Every room has different art, hand-picked by the owner over the years. Nothing cookie cutter,” Barrow emphasized.
“This isn’t a global hotel chain. This is a local entrepreneur who invested here out of love for the province and his passion for music. He could have built this anywhere, but he chose St. John’s,” he added.

In a recent statement, John Steele, CEO of Steele Hotels, said the JAG expansion is designed to build on what already makes the property unique — "passion for music, impeccable service, and a one-of-a-kind guest experience."
While St. John’s offers plenty to explore, the music mogul's mix of nightlife and amenities ensures travellers face the tempting choice of staying in. From full-service dining to a rumoured speakeasy, the property has positioned itself as a destination in its own right.
