More Transborder Routes Put on Hiatus

Summer service to the U.S. continues to be hit by schedule tweaks, pauses and cancellations that all come down to the continued softening demand for transborder travel.

Announced routes between Toronto and La Guardia on Porter Airlines and Toronto and Cleveland on Air Canada bucked the trend last week, but those seem to be the exception.

Aviation website Simple Flying reports that WestJet is “pausing” three prairie routes and one from British Columbia for the summer. Edmonton - Atlanta, Winnipeg - Las Vegas, Winnipeg - Los Angeles and Kelowna - Seattle are no longer scheduled in July and August, 2025.

These are just the latest cuts, which in the last few weeks include the cancellations of planned routes between Vancouver and Austin, Texas and Halifax and Boston, plus reduced service between Monteal and San Francisco. 

As Canadian preferences continue to shift away from American travel, airlines are reallocating resources domestically and to international destinations, including Mexico and Europe.
