Panama City remains open to visitors following a strong earthquake and subsequent aftershocks that have affected parts of the country since October 9, according to an October 12 statement from the Panama Tourism Authority.
The authority confirmed that no fatalities have been reported anywhere in Panama, although structural damage has been recorded in several communities near the epicentre.
Despite the seismic activity, tourism operations in the capital are continuing, and most destinations across the country remain open.
Tocumen International Airport is operational and working with airlines to accommodate passengers whose travel plans were temporarily disrupted by safety protocols.
The Panama Canal is also continuing normal operations.
Some Communities Reporting Structural Damage
While much of Panama's tourism infrastructure remains operational, authorities are responding to damage in communities in the country's interior, including Penonomé, Santiago, Tonosí, Torio and Venao.
Recovery efforts are underway in these areas, with local and national authorities providing assistance to affected residents and assessing the damage.
The tourism authority said it will continue providing updates on recovery efforts and the resumption of tourism activities in affected communities.
Safety and Tourism Operations
The Panama Tourism Authority also pointed to the country's building regulations and government oversight as important factors in its ability to respond to earthquakes.
"Strict building codes and oversight by the authorities help strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to seismic events. Maintaining and reinforcing these measures forms part of an ongoing commitment to the safety of buildings and the protection of human life."
The Panama Tourism Authority says it will continue issuing updates as recovery efforts progress.
What Canadian Travellers Should Know
The Government of Canada continues to advise travellers to take normal security precautions in Panama, with regional advisories in effect.
In an update issued October 11, Global Affairs Canada advised Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Arena, El Cacao and Quebro in Veraguas Province due to damage caused by the October 9 earthquake.
Canadian travel advisors are encouraged to review the latest government guidance, confirm arrangements with airlines and local suppliers, and monitor conditions in affected regions.
