The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's most compelling destinations and one of its most rewarding to explore. The region's largest country delivers dazzling turquoise coastline, emerald mountain ranges, centuries of vibrant history and a food culture worth writing home about, all on a single magnificent island. Whether the draw is legendary resort glamour on the east coast, exhilarating Atlantic energy in the north or sun-soaked serenity in the south, the Dominican Republic offers a version of the Caribbean that feels genuinely distinct.

Punta Cana: the dream you've seen in pictures

For many first-time visitors, Punta Cana is where the Dominican Republic begins and it sets an extraordinary standard from the moment you arrive. Bávaro Beach, the jewel of the east coast, stretches nearly 50 kilometres of powdery white sand lined with coconut palms, its water shifting from aquamarine to deep sapphire depending on the light. The resort region delivers on the ultimate all-inclusive experience, with properties featuring swim-up bars, oceanfront infinity pools and every watersport imaginable. Beyond the resort grounds, the adventure opens further. Saona Island, a short catamaran ride offshore, rewards with some of the most photogenic beaches in the entire Caribbean, clear shallow flats and starfish drifting in the current. In the evening, open-air restaurants turn out fresh ceviche, grilled red snapper and La Bandera, the national dish of rice, beans and braised meat, alongside cocktails built around Brugal rum. It's the kind of evening that stays in the memory long after the flight home.

Puerto Plata: where the north coast surprises

The Atlantic-facing north coast trades polished luxury for raw, genuine character and travellers who discover it rarely want to go anywhere else. The fortified Fortaleza San Felipe, built in the 16th century to defend against pirates, still stands watch over the harbour. Cable cars climb Pico Isabel de Torres, a 793-metre peak crowned by a Christ the Redeemer statue, delivering panoramic views that sweep from jungle canopy to cobalt sea. At street level, the Victorian gingerbread architecture of Puerto Plata's historic centre tells the story of a city shaped by sugar wealth and Atlantic trade winds. The beaches at Playa Dorada and Cabarete carry serious reputations in the kitesurfing world; consistent Atlantic winds have made this coastline one of the top kite destinations on the planet. Cabarete's beachfront strip backs it up at night with open-air bars, cold Presidente beers and grilled lobster served practically at the tide line. It's a corner of the island that rewards curiosity.

Samaná and La Romana: the Dominican Republic's best-kept secrets

Beyond the well-visited areas of the Dominican Republic are two destinations that reward the curious traveller in entirely different ways. The Samaná Peninsula is lush and dramatic, its jungle-covered hills tumbling toward a coastline that feels almost untouched. From January to March, the warm waters offshore become one of the world's finest stages for humpback whale watching, a genuinely breathtaking spectacle. Playa Rincón, widely considered among the finest beaches in the entire Caribbean, lives up to every word of its reputation, while El Limón waterfall is best reached on horseback through dense jungle trails. Los Haitises National Park adds another dimension entirely: mangrove channels, ancient cave paintings and a silence that feels earned. The charming towns of Las Terrenas and Las Galeras round out a peninsula that moves at its own unhurried pace.

La Romana, further south, offers its own kind of wonder. Altos de Chavón, a meticulously recreated 16th-century Mediterranean village perched above the Chavón River, is one of the island's most extraordinary sights, its 5,000-seat amphitheatre having hosted everyone from Frank Sinatra to Santana. Reef-protected coastal waters make for serene snorkelling and easy kayaking and the local food scene is worth lingering over: sancocho stew, golden tostones and fresh coconut water handed over at the roadside.

Their Dominican Republic escape, perfectly planned

With direct flights from Canadian gateways, the Dominican Republic is one of the top destinations in the Caribbean for a reason. Centuries of history, captivating nature, gorgeous coastlines and delicious cuisine keep travellers coming back, time and again. Whether they're seeking adventure, relaxation or just hanging by the pool, the Dominican Republic delivers on every detail of their ideal vacation. Book their package with WestJet Vacations.
