A chance to wander cobbled streets at your own pace, sip Riesling as castles drift by, and take in the scenery from the still waters of the Rhine. That’s the kind of luxury Riviera Travel delivers aboard the MS Geoffrey Chaucer, as TravelPulse Canada experienced firsthand during a nine-day FAM alongside 11 advisors.

Riviera Travel, long established as the UK’s top river cruise line, is setting its sights on North America, offering high-end experiences “without the luxury tax."
Riviera isn’t about excess, it’s about experience.
From Strasbourg to Koblenz, Heidelberg to Rüdesheim, each day unfolded at a river cruise pace: walking tours through medieval old towns, tastings of regional wine and beer, and unhurried moments to shop, explore, and savour.

Onboard MS Geoffrey Chaucer
It's worth noting that Riviera names its ships after famous literary, historical, or culturally significant scholars.
Naming ships after figures like Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet, writer, and philosopher, adds a layer of storytelling and sophistication to their brand.—qualities Riviera wants passengers to associate with the experience on board.

So, when you sail on the MS Geoffrey Chaucer, the name isn’t just decorative—it signals a boutique, culturally rich, and thoughtfully designed river cruise, appealing to travellers who appreciate history and a curated experience.
Advisors were quick to notice the boutique feel and thoughtful design of the ship.
“From my experience sailing with Riviera River Cruises on the MS Geoffrey Chaucer, I was genuinely impressed by how much value and quality they deliver to their guests,” said Mandee Migliaccio, CEO of Stepping Out Travel Services.

“Riviera keeps things simple and transparent, which I really appreciate both as a traveler and as an advisor. Guests know exactly what is included: five-star ships, full-board dining, guided excursions every day, complimentary Wi-Fi, and all-day tea and coffee. This creates a smooth, worry-free experience with fewer surprises and more time to simply enjoy the journey,” Migliaccio added.
Dining options also impressed. While multi-course meals in the main restaurant delivered regional flavours, the Geoffrey Chaucer Bistro proved a favourite for its cozy, open-kitchen concept. “I loved that I could book a table at the Bistro for a more intimate, no-fee dining experience,” said Migliaccio.

Riviera’s evolving approach to beverage packages was also a talking point for advisors on the FAM.
The Superior Drinks Package includes house wines, draft beer, soft drinks, juices, cocktails, mocktails, house spirits, and regional wines with dinner.
In 2026, an all-inclusive drinks package is introduced, extending coverage from 10 a.m. to midnight. “This move adds even greater value and allows guests to truly relax knowing nearly everything they might want is already covered,” Migliaccio noted.

Who to Book
With English-speaking cruise directors and concierges managing the details, it is ideal for active adult travellers.
For solo travellers, Riviera’s frequent no-single-supplement promotions are another major selling point.
“This cruise is best suited for travelers who love cultural exploration, comfortable accommodations, and the reassurance of excellent value woven into a five-star experience,” said Migliaccio. “Riviera tends to attract curious, engaged travelers who want to go beyond the surface, and the Geoffrey Chaucer makes the perfect home base for that kind of journey."

Eric Schmit, Riviera Travel’s VP of Sales for North America, says the river cruise line embarks on the North American market with a promise of feeling "upscale, but not uptight.”
Schmit emphasized that Riviera’s highly trained crew create an intimate environment where guests feel genuinely cared for.

Compassionate Travel
Beyond the onboard experience, Riviera prioritizes positive community impact. Ingredients, alcohol, and other provisions are sourced locally at each port, supporting regional economies. The company also engages in charitable initiatives, such as clean river walkathons, and partners with organizations like Practical Action.
Schmit, who joined Riviera after 15 years in the luxury cruise space, praised the brand’s value proposition.

He shared with TravelPulse Canada that as the river cruise line establishes its North American operations, it is focusing on trade-first marketing through advisors rather than direct-to-consumer campaigns.

Alex Lopez, Owner at Next Level Travel, LLC, added, “Riviera Travel delivers an approachable price point without sacrificing quality. I think this opens the door to clients who may have felt river cruising was ‘too luxury’ or out of their budget, but still want a premium, European river experience.
“All the stops struck the perfect balance of guided touring and free exploration. I think it’s ideal for couples, solos, and even small groups who appreciate a more relaxed but exceptional service onboard.”

In the end, the FAM introduced Riviera as affordable luxury: crew members get to know you by name and dietary preferences; where the experience is about active immersion in each port, moments of stillness, stunning scenery, and memories clients will return home talking about.
Riviera’s river cruise fleet comprises 13 ships sailing Europe’s waterways, including the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Moselle, Main, Rhône, and Seine rivers. Itineraries can be found here.
