Travel security analytics company A3M Global Monitoring has released an updated travel risk map “from the LGTBQ+ Perspective.”
The company assigned each country a safety rating, from one/dark green (not specifically dangerous for the 2SLGBTQ+ community) to five/dark red (“Sexual and gender minorities may face imprisonment, including life sentences, corporal punishment, and the death penalty.”)
Canada was ranked among the safest travel destinations, at number four, with a low risk rating. The United States was absent from the top ten, garnering a yellow/level three rating.
The report is prefaced by the caveat that no country is homogeneous, and that experiences may vary widely throughout a region, or between cities and rural areas. It also notes that “there can be significant differences between official policies, rules and regulations and the experiences of the community in their everyday lives,” offering the example where homosexuality is officially illegal, but a vibrant gay scene flourishes underground. Lastly, it emphasizes that some countries treat “LGB” differently from “TQ” and that the treatment of visitors to a country is not necessarily the same way locals are treated.
The report focuses on laws affecting 2SLGBTQ+ people, but was compiled in consultation with locals. “In some cases, we were able to interview LGBTQ+ organizations and members of the community in order to take their lived experiences in the country into account,” states the report.
