The Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau has announced that the extended tsunami advisory for the state of Hawai'i has been canceled. Local authorities warn that sea-level changes and strong currents are still dangerous for swimmers, boaters or those located near beaches or in marinas.
Airports throughout Hawai'i are now operating normally, though travelers are advised to check their communications to see if there are any lingering delays due to the tsunami advisory. FlightAware is not currently reporting any significant delays or cancellations in Hawai'i today.
Travelers are on high alert after a massive magnitude 8.8
earthquake struck off Russia's Pacific coast on Tuesday, resulting in tsunami
warnings in Hawaii and along the West Coast of the continental United States.
According to Reuters.com, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
reduced the alert level to an advisory after the first waves from the
earthquake washed ashore in Hawaii and along the West Coast.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green revealed that the state had “not
seen a wave of consequence, which is a great relief to us.” He told ABC News
that “it’s kind of a blessing to not be reporting any damage," but told
residents and visitors to remain vigilant about more tsunami waves.
Coastal regions of Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington
remained under National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) tsunami
advisories as of Wednesday morning.
The U.S. Coast Guard in Hawaii also ordered ships out of
harbors as a precaution, potentially impacting the cruise industry serving the
islands.
While some residents in Hawaii were evacuated to avoid potentially
dangerous situations, the Hawaiʻi Visitors & Convention Bureau revealed
that everyone has been allowed to return home, but that strong currents and
localized coastal flooding could still become an issue.
Airlines serving Hawaii temporarily paused operations to the
islands—including Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines—resulting in flight
delays, cancellations, and diversions.
As a result, Hawaiian Airlines has issued a travel advisory and
waived change fees for impacted passengers. The carrier also offered customers
the chance to cancel
flight plans and use the value as credit toward a new ticket.
