Prime Minister Mark Carney and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand both expressed condolences over a mass shooting in Mexico that claimed the life of one Canadian tourist and injured another, as well as injuring people from the U.S., Colombia, Russia, Brazil and the Netherlands,

The shooting happened Monday, April 20 at the Teotihuacán pyramids outside Mexico city. The gunmen fired at people visiting the historic site, wounding seven people of various nationalities as well as four more who were injured as a result of the chaos caused by his actions. Witnesses told Global News that they saw people falling on the steep stairs of the pyramid as they tried to escape the gunfire.

As he entered a cabinet meeting in Ottawa Tuesday morning, the prime minister told reporters “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the individual who was tragically killed.”

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to strengthen security at key Mexican archaeological sites and tourist destinations. "What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families," she wrote in Spanish on social media, reports the BBC

Carney thanked the president for her words. “It’s a terrible circumstance. I very much appreciate President Sheinbaum’s personal attention to the matter, and we’re working with Mexican authorities on the situation. But it’s a sad day,” he said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said consular officials were assisting the remaining victims and were available to help all Canadians in Mexico.

“Of course, I express my own condolences to the family of the victim, and I will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that Canadians are supported abroad, and that this investigation uncovers facts relating to the death, the murder of a Canadian citizen on Mexican soil,” Anand told reporters.

The name of the deceased Canadian tourist has not been released. According to Al Jazeera, the gunman has been identified as Julio Cesar Jasso Ramirez, a Mexican national, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot at the scene.
