Niagara Airport Takes a Step Towards Commercial Flights

The Niagara District Airport has secured $9.7 million from the province of Ontario to put towards designing an expansion. Currently, the small airport at Niagara on the Lake, which is co-owned by the cities of St. Catherines and Niagara Falls, doesn’t receive commercial passenger traffic, although it is connected by the Air Canada Landline Service. This investment will be used to lay the groundwork for transforming the facility into a regional airport with scheduled commercial flights.

According to the Niagara District Airport 2025-2045 master plan, eventual upgrades will include a proposed runway extension of 2,500 feet, terminal upgrades, taxiways, roads and a new building for airport operations and emergency services. 

Following the design phase, which is estimated to take 18-20 months, the airport will look at necessary next steps, which may mean securing more funding before embarking on construction. 

The province announced the airport investment as part of its Destination Niagara Strategy, which aims to attract 25 million visitors annually and add $3 billion to Ontario’s economy.
