Ottawa has announced enhancements to our border security that will include hiring 1,000 new Canadian Border Services Agency officers. They will be hired over the next five years, as the $617.7 million investment is rolled out.
Additionally, the government announced it will bump the training stipend recruits receive from $125 a week (a rate that has remained unchanged for 15 years) to $525 a week and introduce changes to retirement calculations.
“If we expect these men and women to serve our country, we have to invest in the excellence in which they work,” said MP Arielle Kayabaga, deputy government house leader. “We have to make sure that our investments are going towards our men and women who protect our borders every day. So, we have to increase our support for them.”
The majority of the new hires will serve as uniformed officers, including in the rail and marine environments, and postal and courier screening. The remainder will work as intelligence officers, investigators, and security screening officers.
“In a more dangerous and divided world, now more than ever, it’s time for us to stand up for Canadians,” Kayabaga told reporters when she made the announcement at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, “stand up for each other, and protect what matters most to Canadians and move forward in a safe and secure way.”
