With the newly introduced requirement that “non-immigrant aliens” (also known as visitors) register with the US government for trips of longer than 30 days, a lot of confusion and misinformation has been floating around.

To help steer people through the new regulations, Snowbird Advisor has created a straightforward guide. “Our goal is to combat this misinformation by providing Canadian travellers with a clear, detailed, accurate resource that explains the new registration rules,” said Stephen Fine, President of Snowbird Advisor.

The Globe and Mail reports approximately one million Canadians are snowbirds, spending a chunk of the winter in the U.S.  “Many snowbirds have expressed anxiety and confusion about whether the new rules apply to them and what they need to do to comply,” said Fine. “Unfortunately, their anxiety and confusion has been further compounded by the overwhelming amount of inaccurate and conflicting information being circulated online and by word-of-mouth.”

The guide can be found at www.snowbirdadvisor.ca and will be updated regularly. It aims to

  • Provide a clear overview of the new registration rules
  • Help individuals determine if they are required to register
  • Offer step by step details on how to register

While not intended to serve as legal advice, the guide will help answer frequently asked questions for Canadian citizens and permanent residents planning to spend more than 30 days in the U.S.
