Riu Hotels & Resorts has purchased a plot of land in the heart of Chicago, with plans to build a 28-floor, 350-room Riu Plaza hotel.
Construction work will begin in spring 2022 and is expected to last for around two years.
"It's a dream location for any investor, right in the heart of the city. That's why I'm so delighted to present this project, which has gone ahead despite numerous difficulties," said Luis Riu, CEO of RIU Hotels & Resorts.
"Chicago is a great tourist destination that complements and enhances our range of urban hotels and strengthens RIU's commitment to the United States, where we are about to open our fourth hotel, the Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square."
Chicago is the third largest city in the USA by population and one of the most popular tourist destinations. The future Riu Plaza hotel will be located at 150 East Ontario Street in the Streeterville neighbourhood, close to the famous Navy Pier, with the Chicago River to the south and Lake Michigan to the east. The famous Magnificent Mile shopping area is a short walk away.
The company says the property will be fully focused on travellers visiting the city for business or tourism and will offer a competitive range of services including breakfast, just like the chain's other Riu Plaza urban hotels.
RIUis about to open the Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square, taking the number of Riu Plaza hotels to nine, with locations including Madrid, Panama City, Guadalajara, Berlin, Dublin, Miami Beach and a New York City Times Square location.
Future openings include a 4-star, 435-room hotel next to Victoria Station in London, England, scheduled to open in 2023. And Riu is coming to Canada, with the new-build, 350-room Riu Plaza Toronto Hotel coming soon.
