When the first frost settles over Canada, a steady stream of travelers head south, bound not for Florida or Arizona but for Baja California. Drawn by mild winters, two dramatic coastlines and a slower pace of life, Canadian snowbirds have made the Mexican state a seasonal home away from home.

Many arrive by road, piloting RVs and camper vans down the peninsula to beachfront parks where neighbors quickly become friends. Others rent condos or own second homes, returning to the same communities year after year.

San Felipe, on the Sea of Cortez, has long attracted winter residents with its sunny skies, sweeping beaches and relaxed fishing-town atmosphere. On the Pacific side, Ensenada and Rosarito offer cooler breezes, lively dining scenes and easy access to the U.S. border.

Part of the appeal is value. A lower cost of living lets snowbirds stretch retirement budgets further, whether they are dining on fish tacos at a seaside stand or booking a round of golf. Proximity matters too, since visitors can drive back north for family events or medical appointments without a long-haul flight.

Winter also brings plenty to do. Gray whales migrate along the coast from roughly December through April, and whale-watching tours depart from Ensenada. Carnaval season fills Ensenada's streets with music and color, while the nearby Valle de Guadalupe invites wine lovers to explore its tasting rooms and farm-to-table restaurants.

Seasoned snowbirds recommend some planning before heading south. Travelers driving into Mexico need Mexican auto insurance, and visitors should secure the proper tourist permit for longer stays. Arranging travel health coverage and phone and banking options ahead of time helps ensure a smooth season.

For many Canadians, Baja California has become more than a getaway. It is a winter community where the sun shines and the welcome is warm.
