Iconic Fairmont Hotel Up for Sale

The Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello is up for sale under accounting firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Presently owned by the struggling China Evergrande Group, PwC is now handling the sale.  

The stately retreat, which opened as a private club in 1930, has been referred to as the world’s largest log cabin. The 211-room property is located 135 kilometres west of Montreal and boasts an 18-hole golf course, spa, game preserve and conference centre. It has hosted VIPs including Margaret Thatcher and Grace Kelly. 

Evergrande bought the hotel, which is managed by Accor, in 2014. In 2024 the Chinese company was ordered to liquidate its assets. The sale was handed to PwC earlier this month.  

Accor is contracted to continue managing the Montebello for “several more decades,” according to CBC News. The sale is not expected to affect the operation of the hotel.
