Disney World’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, a themed hotel experience, might have only opened in 2022, but it’s already closing, with sources familiar with the project noting the hotel will be converted into Walt Disney Imagineering offices.

The news came from entertainment site, TheWrap, which posits the project was worth an estimated $1 billion, though Disney reported it cost $400 million.

The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser adventure hotel closed in September of 2023, after about a year of operation. Those lucky enough to stay at the hotel before its closure bought a vacation package costing $4,800 for two and $6,000 for a family of four, which included food, transportation and entry into Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The travel industry had a lot of time to wonder about what the Galactic Starcruiser could turn into: a Star Wars-themed hotel without the immersive activities, another short-term lodging adventure, either Star Wars-themed or another brand with a popular fan base, or just use the building to hold more restaurants and dining options.

TheWrap believes that Walt Disney Imagineering will use it as a hub, including new Disney attractions like the “Encanto”-themed world at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the new “Cars” and Villains-themed worlds and more.

The park never officially explained why the experience had closed in such a short time, though in its notice of the closure in 2023, wrote, “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is one of our most creative projects ever and has been praised by our guests and recognized for setting a new bar for innovation and immersive entertainment. This premium experience gave us the opportunity to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and we will take what we’ve learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans.”

While we now know what the adventure hotel will be used for in the future, we just hope they keep some of the Star Wars themed design features for those Imagineers.
