Venice is considering a significant increase to its tourist
entry fee for day-trippers and applying the charge across a longer portion of
the year as the Italian city continues efforts to battle overtourism.
According to Reuters.com, Venice’s councilor for budget and taxation,
Michele Zuin, said the current €5 to €10 ($5.75-$11.50) fee is no longer enough
to discourage some visitors from making day trips during the busiest periods.
The Italian government would need to discuss and approve a
new fee for 2027.
Zuin said officials have discussed a maximum charge of €30
($34) per person, although he also acknowledged that a fee as high as €50 had
been discussed. The €30 figure is currently being considered as the potential
upper limit, rather than an approved rate for 2027.
Venice introduced the entry fee in 2024 for visitors making day trips to the
historic city without an overnight stay. Early bookers can pay a lower rate,
while several exemptions apply, including for children younger than 14.
During 2026, the fee was charged on selected days between
April 3 and July 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time. The program generated
more than €5.2 million for the city from around 680,000 tickets, Reuters
reported.
Venice officials said the program is intended primarily to
manage overtourism rather than generate revenue. The city’s official website
says the 2026 trial was designed to help manage tourist flows and discourage
unplanned day trips.
