A new Leger survey has revealed that Canadians who have travelled to Mexico previously are more likely to say they will return, despite the recent violence in some states. Of those polled, 46 percent said they would still visit Mexico as intended, but that number jumps to 64 percent for those who have repeat visits planned.

Among those with a trip to Mexico planned or intended within the next year, 31 percent said they will go somewhere else instead. Seven percent said they are considering calling off the trip altogether and only two percent said they have already cancelled.

Having a previous Mexico trip was also a strong indicator of how safe people were likely to rate the country as a destination. In general, 55 percent rated their safety concerns between eight and 10 out of 10. People who had been to Mexico before averaged 6.5 out of 10.

When asked to compare how safe they felt in Mexico and the United States, the general consensus was that the U.S. is safer (44 percent) and 21 percent consider our North American cousins equally safe. The big difference is between the general public, who said they considered Mexico to be safer than the U.S. (17 percent) and prior visitors, 28 percent of whom said the same.

When asked about how long it will take Mexico to recover from the hit its tourism industry took from the frightening images in the news, 27 percent of Canadians believe it will only take a few months, 44 percent believe it will take about a year,  22 percent say several years and 11 percent believe the reputation may never fully recover. Again, optimism is stronger among Canadians who have travelled to Mexico recently. Among them, 39 percent expect recovery within a few months and 30 percent within a year.
