Brendan Vacations has become the first tour operator based in Ireland to receive a gold certification from the Sustainable Tourism Network (STN), according to a press release from the company.

The gold certification represents the highest level of achievement from STN and follows a rigorous audit across more than 80 environmental, social, and economic sustainability criteria.

STN is considered the leading authority in sustainable tourism training in Ireland, with a mission to transform tourism into a regenerative force that benefits communities and the environment.

“Earning this achievement is a testament to our dedication to eco-conscious travel,” Catherine Reilly, Managing Director of Brendan Vacations said.

“From implementing a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Checklist for our chauffeurs and guests to encourage responsible travel on trips to adopting 100% renewable energy and committing to a 10% reduction in carbon emissions by the end of the year, we’re striving to be a leader in the sustainable tourism industry.”

The company is part of The Travel Corporation (TTC), a global collective of 18 travel brands. TTC’s nonprofit arm, the TreadRight Foundation, works alongside its brands to promote sustainable travel practices under the framework of “How We Tread Right,” a strategy aligned with the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

As part of that approach, Brendan Vacations has modified its itineraries to incorporate MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences. These offerings range from climate-focused excursions to activities that highlight sustainable agriculture, cultural heritage, and biodiversity.

In County Kerry, for example, travellers can now participate in a seaweed experience that includes tea made with foraged seaweed, followed by a guided walk exploring coastal plant life and tidal ecosystems.

Another experience includes visiting Ballykilcavan Farm & Brewery, where guests hear directly from the farm’s owner about how he created a sustainable business model to protect his family’s agricultural legacy.

The company's sustainability efforts can be found on their website: Brendan Vacations – Sustainable Travel.
