Cole Porter had it right. Paris is magic, not just in April, but any time of the year. And when you arrive there in mid-November and the temperature is 20 degrees C, the sun is shining and your Viking longship is docked on the Seine with the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop, euphoria is the inevitable result.
After a comfortable Air Canada A330-300 flight from Toronto, we were quickly met by Viking representatives and taken to the Viking Fjorgyn, a shiny new member of the 72-strong Viking Europe river fleet.
On such a glorious day, catching up with sleep was out of the question, so after a tasty first lunch aboard, we headed out to see some sights. The looming Eiffel Tower was an obvious first stop, but enjoying the riverside promenade along with thousands of jogging, cycling and walking Parisians enjoying the unseasonably warm weather was equally enthralling.
A quick nap, a brief muster drill and a delicious dinner followed, with French wine, escargots, grilled sea bass and crème brulee among the highlights. Our comfortable stateroom absorbed all of our belongings with ease, and crew members faithfully displayed the warm and playful river cruise vibe.
Before leaving at dinnertime tomorrow, we'll have a panoramic tour of the city, and an afternoon jaunt to Montmartre. Then the the Fjorgyn will motor up for a seven-day return journey on the Seine.
