MSC Cruises has completed installation of a 39-foot dragon sculpture aboard its newest flagship, MSC World Asia, as the ship takes shape ahead of its planned debut in the Mediterranean later this year.

The stainless-steel sculpture is suspended 33 feet above the Outdoor World Promenade, an open-air space with ocean views, dining, entertainment and relaxation areas. Designed by Balich Wonder Studio, the dragon is intended to serve as a visual centerpiece and one of the ship’s most recognizable design elements.

MSC World Asia is currently under construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The ship is scheduled to begin seven-night Mediterranean cruises December 4, 2026, with itineraries calling at Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Civitavecchia for Rome, Messina and Valletta.

Measuring 39 feet long and 11 feet wide, the pearlescent-white dragon is outfitted with nearly 700 mirrors, 400 meters of integrated strip lighting and more than 3,000 LED light points. The combination of reflective surfaces and lighting is designed to give the sculpture the appearance of movement, particularly after dark, when it will illuminate above the promenade.

“For the first time, an icon becomes the defining symbol of a ship,” says Marco Balich, chairman of Balich Wonder Studio. “The dragon brings together vision, craftsmanship and emotion, creating an experience that will remain with guests long after their journey.”

The sculpture is part of MSC World Asia’s broader design, which incorporates elements inspired by Asian culture, art and landscapes alongside the line’s European design aesthetic.

MSC World Asia will be the third ship in MSC Cruises’ World Class series. Like its sister ships, the new vessel will feature a range of international dining, entertainment and family-friendly experiences.
