TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 1 has become the first cruise ship to return to Montego Bay following Hurricane Melissa, carrying 2,894 passengers and a crew of 1,000.
Breaking Travel News reports Tourism Minister Hon. Edmund Bartlett called the arrival a milestone, noting the cruise sub-sector is “rebounding strongly.” Since the hurricane, Jamaica has welcomed around 32,000 cruise visitors, with totals expected to reach 64,000 by the end of November.
Montego Bay Mayor Richard Vernon said, “The ships would not come unless we’re ready… the visitors are providing work for our people.”
The ship donated 12 pallets of relief items to support local recovery efforts.
