Montreal’s new airport, the Montreal Metropolitan Airport, or MET (YHU) officially opens today, June 15, 2026, for passenger traffic, with Porter Airlines taking off for Vancouver, (YVR) Toronto-Pearson (YYZ), Toronto-City (YTZ), and St. John’s, N.L. (YYT). It’s just the start for Porter, which will see flights to 11 cities as the week continues.

The flights from the new airport are part of Porter’s long-term strategy to increase its network. “This expansion is primarily focused on strengthening our domestic network, with the opportunity to build on that over time with U.S. and sun destinations,” Porter’s Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Edmond Eldebs told TravelPulse Canada in a recent interview.

According to Porter, passenger traffic at MET is projected to hit one million in its first year, climbing to four million annually at full capacity, buoyed by  the airport's location close to downtown. Porter has stated the privately-funded national transportation infrastructure project will “meaningfully contribute to increasing air access for one of Canada’s most prominent cities.”

The new airport is already generating significant buzz, with well-attended media and trade previews garnering positive reviews, with the passenger areas being compared to exclusive airport lounges, complete with swivel chairs, banks of well-cushioned seats, electrical outlets galore, and marble tables .
