Porter Doubles Surcharge on Rewards Bookings

Passengers who book flights on VIPorter loyalty points will be faced with an increased surcharge due to the “global oil market,”  according to a statement from Porter Airlines. The surcharge  was reduced to $20 in June in a move the airline says was a step towards its goal of eliminating the surcharge altogether. However, with the “unexpected and sharp increases” of the cost of fuel, the airline is temporarily raising the charge to $40 for bookings made after July 17, 2026.

The $40 surcharge only applies to bookings made using VIPorter Rewards, not regular airfare bookings. 

Porter states that it hoped to remove the surcharge rather than increase it so steeply, and that it will discontinue charging the fee once fuel pricing is less volatile.  “This is not the direction we wanted to take,” the airline said in a statement emailed to its customers.  “While these recent market shifts have stalled our progress in removing the surcharge, our commitment remains unchanged. We plan to remove it entirely when market conditions allow.”
