Cancun International Airport will be getting a major upgrade this year.

The airport’s owner, Aeropuertos del Surest (ASUR), has revealed plans to spend $1.4 billion on renovating and expanding passenger services at the facility.

The upgrades will be focused on Terminal 1, Terminal 4, and a new Maya Train Station, according to the Cancun Sun.

Terminal 4, which is both a domestic and international terminal, was opened in 2017 and serves as many as nine million passengers annually.

A variety of airlines operate from the terminal including Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines. Europe-based carriers also use the terminal.

The billion-dollar plans include expanding Terminal 4 to accommodate still more flights and passengers, the Cancun Sun reported. An on-site hotel and a new lounge may also be added to the terminal, though details for those features have not been confirmed.

The sweeping Cancun International Airport renovations will also encompass Terminal 1, which is primarily used for private and charter flights. The terminal generally accommodates luxury travelers, but is also used by a small Belize-based airline.

Impact on Travel

Mexico’s second busiest airport, Cancun International Airport serves more than 30 million passengers annually.

The renovations and upgrades are likely to cause some challenges for those using the airport while construction is taking place, the Cancun Sun reported. This may include delays in airplanes getting to their gates and an impact on the services available to those in the terminal.

The goal however, is to create new gates that will allow a quicker process for passengers boarding and disembarking from flights.

Train Station Investment

The renovation plans also include adding a new train station for the Maya Train, which had its ribbon cutting in late 2023 and currently serves Cancun through Campeche.

Work remains underway for the train line, including adding service south toward Playa del Carmen and Tulum, as well as adding tracks between the tourist region of Cancun and the Cancun International Airport.

When complete, the train will encompass some 950-miles and is expected to connect Cancun with a long list of popular tourist destinations including Calakmul and Palenque.
