Air Canada Flight to Halifax Diverted due to Pilot Emergency

An Air Canada flight from Newark to Halifax was diverted to Boston yesterday, June 24, 2026, when the pilot suffered a medical emergency. Air Canada Flight 7664 left the New Jersey airport at 12:39 pm. An hour later, at 1:40 pm, Massachusetts State Police and Boston Logan International officials received word that the pilot had become incapacitated and that the co-pilot would be diverting there. 

"A crew member was reported to be having a medical emergency and aircraft was being flown by the co-pilot," Massachusetts State Police said in a statement. 

The plane, carrying 61 passengers, was met by emergency services on the runway when it landed at 2 pm. CBS Boston showed EMS wheeling a patient on a stretcher into a waiting ambulance. The pilot was taken to Mass General Hospital. No further details were released on the pilot’s condition.

Air Canada made a statement highlighting that everything went as it should have during the emergency. "During the flight, the captain experienced a medical issue and was removed from the flight deck as per safety protocols," the airline. "The first officer took control of the aircraft and diverted the flight to Boston, where it landed safely. Pilots are trained to fly aircraft and land safely without the assistance of a second pilot." 

CBS reports the aircraft left Boston around 7:30 pm Wednesday and landed safely in Halifax.
