The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) says it has completed more than 90% of the action items directed specifically at the organization in response to recommendations from the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario (OAGO).

In a progress update released July 3, TICO said 91% of the action items assigned to the organization had been completed as of May 31, 2026. Overall, 72% of all recommended action items have been completed, with the remaining two TICO-led initiatives expected to be finished later this year.

“Our team remains committed to implementing the Auditor General’s recommendations,” said TICO CEO Richard Smart.

“With each milestone achieved, we continue to strengthen consumer protection and enhance the effectiveness of our regulatory oversight.”

According to TICO, work completed since its last update has focused on strengthening regulatory oversight, improving compliance processes and expanding its risk-based approach to regulation.

Recent initiatives include advancing a risk-based oversight framework with enhanced risk-rating systems and compliance policies, continuing inspections based on registrants' risk levels with increased attention on higher-risk businesses, strengthening complaint monitoring through data analysis, and improving internal systems, policies and processes to increase efficiency, transparency and consistency.

The update follows the OAGO's 2023 report, which included 16 recommendations related to TICO's oversight of Ontario's travel industry. Of those recommendations, nine were directed solely at TICO, six were directed jointly at TICO and Ontario's Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, and one was directed exclusively at the ministry.

TICO said it will continue issuing public progress updates as work on the remaining recommendations continues.
