Transat Distribution Canada (TDC) has introduced a new bilingual training program to help its franchise and affiliate agency owners manage business succession, whether they are preparing to sell their agency or taking ownership for the first time.
The online program is structured into two parts: A 3.5-hour module focused on selling an agency and a five-hour module for those acquiring one. It was developed with input from Transat’s legal, financial, and human resources teams, as well as agency owners who participated through the TDC Lab think tank.
According to TDC, the training addresses a wide range of operational and strategic considerations involved in succession, including management, marketing, legal compliance, and talent development, while also acknowledging the personal and emotional dimensions of ownership transitions.
“Selling or acquiring a travel agency is more than just a transaction; it's a deeply personal and strategic decision,” says Dianne Jackson, Director of Franchise and Affiliate Members at TDC.

“It's not just about logistics, but also about legacy. We've developed a program that reflects the real challenges and opportunities of succession, with practical advice and an understanding of the emotional aspect of this type of transaction (both selling and acquiring), to help owners move forward with clarity and confidence.”
Jackson notes that the training is designed to provide a strong foundation but is not intended to replace professional guidance. She adds that “although very comprehensive, this training is not a substitute for personalized advice from professionals such as lawyers or tax specialists, who are often called upon to assist with this type of process. But we are certainly achieving our goal of presenting the essential elements to consider in this important step and providing our owners with ideas for action and reflection."
The program includes dedicated content for owners planning to sell, as well as for new and prospective owners. Topics covered range from legal and financial preparation, including contracts, compliance, and budgeting, to human resources, leadership, and team management. Marketing considerations and the personal impact of ownership changes are also addressed.
“This initiative reinforces TDC's commitment to giving its network of franchisees and affiliates the tools they need to thrive, not only today, but also in the years to come,” Jackson concludes. “Because, as always, our goal is to be there for them when they need us, to support them.”
