Sale of Historic Quebec Hotel Moves Ahead

International giant Westmount Hospitality may soon be the new owners of the historic Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello. Financial firm PwC, which has been handling the sale, filed the paperwork with the court on July 24, 2026 for approval.

The stately retreat, which opened as a private club in 1930, has been referred to as the world’s largest log cabin. The 211-room property is located 135 kilometres west of Montreal and boasts an 18-hole golf course, spa, game preserve and conference centre. It has hosted VIPs including Margaret Thatcher and Grace Kelly. 

The sale had been ordered in 2024 when the present owner, China Evergrande Group, was ordered to liquidate its assets to address its $300 billion debt. At the time it was announced that Accor (owner of Fairmont) was contracted to manage the Montebello for "several more decades" and that the sale was not expected to affect the guest experience. 

Westmount Hospitality Group has more than 500 properties in its portfolio and is one of the largest privately-held hospitality organizations in the world. According to reporting from CBC News, Westmount’s offer beat out competition from a group that included Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer, Spa Nordik founder Martin Paquette and major Ottawa-Gatineau developer Devcore.
