Tulum Travel Guide

Over the years, Tulum has become an increasingly iconic holiday destination due to its incredible beaches, resorts, jungle landscape, and vibrant social scene.

Aside from the natural landscapes, there is plenty to do and see with Mayan Ruins and enjoyable water sports in the vicinity.

How you make your way around Tulum will depend on where you need to go, or where you are situated.

If you are staying at a coastal resort, then the easiest way to get between the airport and your accommodation, as well as out to the town area and other sights, is to get a taxi. These are readily available and your hotel should be able to assist you with hailing them.

If you are in the town and want to get around that area, we recommend walking or renting a bike as the main area is quite small.

When To Visit Tulum

The most popular months to visit Tulum are between January and April, as the temperatures are fairly warm and this is still the dry season.

If you want to visit Tulum during the off-peak period to avoid crowds and save on flights and accommodation, you can visit during the summer months. Despite this being the rainy season, the rain only occurs in short bursts instead of continuous rainfall, so you can still enjoy your vacation.

However, we recommend aiming for November or December. Going into winter, these months will have less rainfall and are just before peak season so it shouldn’t be too crowded.

  • Tulum Town: While visitors usually spend the most time in the beach area of the region, Tulum Town is a must-see there. It is a quaint town area that has casual shops which you can browse through for some memorable souvenirs. Our highlight of the town is the restaurants, as you can get some of the best and most authentic Mexican food here.
  • Coba Ruins: Set in the jungle just outside Tulum, the Coba Ruins are an incredible sight to immerse yourself in Mayan culture and history. The ruins are believed to date back to around 500 A.D., but much of it is still standing.
  • Laguna De Kaan Luum: To feel like you have stepped into another world, you have to take a dip in the famous Laguna De Kaan Luum. The large lagoon has a shallow lake around the outer circle, with a deep sinkhole in the middle which looks like a bright blue dot. The shallow area makes this an ideal swimming spot for the entire family, so we suggest setting aside at least half a day to enjoy this magical site.
