Poland Travel Guide

One of the best places to visit in Central Europe, Poland is a country full of rich history and stunning architecture.

With 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, natural wonders like the Tatras, Bieszczady and Pieniny mountains ranges, and the idyllic seasides of Sopot, Ustka, and the Hel Peninsula, it’s well worth a visit.

We found that the best way to travel around Poland on a budget is by train. You can choose between getting a rail pass or buying individual tickets.

Because train tickets between cities are relatively cheap, the main perk of a rail pass is that it saves you the hassle of buying multiple tickets.

Tickets between neighboring towns and cities range from $5-35, with most tickets being around $10. This makes it likely that individual tickets will be cheaper unless you are planning a long stay.

If you ask us, the train’s your best bet. Buses around Poland aren’t significantly cheaper than trains, and they’re also much slower

Time Zone

Poland has observed Daylight Savings Time for almost 50 years. From the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, the clock is set an hour ahead.

That means that during the summer Poland shifts from UTC/GMT+1 to UTC/GMT+2.

Climate And Weather

Poland generally has a moderate climate, although it can get below freezing in winter. In the summer, temperatures are warm, ranging from 59 to 77°F. It is often above 68°F.

Poland’s winters can be more extreme than its summers, with temperatures between -4 and 39°F. This means that you’ll need to bundle up warm. It very often snows in Poland during the winter.

In our opinion, you should always come prepared for rain. Poland has a notoriously wet climate!

The tourist season in Poland occurs over the summer from July to August. This is because of the lovely warm weather. There are many wonderful opportunities for sightseeing.

However, it can be crowded during these times, which is why some people opt to visit in spring or autumn instead. The weather is still good, but there are fewer tourists.

If you’re willing to brave the cold, Poland over December is beautiful. Covered in snow, the country has some of the best Christmas markets in the world.

    • Kraków. This is one of the most beautiful cities in Poland and is the cultural hub of the country. It has stunning historical architecture and many museums. There is also a selection of world-class restaurants. You can visit Wawel Cathedral, which is Poland’s national church. It features tombs, a crypt, and a tower that you can climb up.

    • Gdańsk. This exquisite coastal city is one of the lesser-known gems of Eastern Europe. We consider it an essential stop while in Poland. While here, walk along the riverfront, or visit the Museum of the Second World War, which highlights the major impact that the war had on Poland.

    • Warsaw. To experience quintessential Poland, we strongly recommend heading to the capital city. It’s distinct because of its very modern, 21st-century feel. That doesn’t mean it has no historical charm, with its very well-preserved Old Town. This is also the place to go if you’re looking for nightlife, with a thriving entertainment scene.
