As Tropical Cyclone Alfred bears down on Australia’s east coast, widespread travel disruptions are affecting air, land, and sea transportation.
According to reports, the storm has created significant uncertainty, with flight cancellations, airport closures, and cruise itinerary changes.
Airports along Australia's southeastern coast have closed and airlines have cancelled hundreds of flights as Category 2 Cyclone Alfred approaches, with landfall expected between Maroochydore and Coolangatta on Friday evening.
Air Travel Disruptions
Major Australian airlines, including Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia, have proactively cancelled flights as the storm approaches, news.com.au reports.
The Gold Coast Airport shut down at 4 p.m. local time on Wednesday, with no reopening timeline announced.
All passenger flights in and out of Brisbane Airport have been suspended until further notice.
Operations at Brisbane will recommence when the Airport’s terminals and runways are deemed safe to re-open.
Airlines are offering flexible travel policies, allowing affected passengers to reschedule or obtain travel credits.
Cruise and Ground Transportation Impact
Carnival Cruise Line has cancelled a scheduled March 6 sailing of the Carnival Luminosa from Brisbane, as the port is now closed due to the storm.
The ship’s next scheduled departure is on March 9.
Greyhound Australia has suspended all bus services entering and exiting Brisbane from Thursday afternoon through Friday. Affected passengers can reschedule for free or opt for a travel credit.
