With the conflict between the U.S. and Iran building momentum, travelers should be cautious about plans to visit destinations near the Persian Gulf or Arabian Sea. The presence of U.S. naval forces in these waters indicates that there is serious potential for danger.

Government Warnings and Flight Changes

The United States, along with Germany, Canada, Australia, India, the United Kingdom and South Korea, has issued emergency advisories urging citizens to avoid travel to Iran.

Travelers should certainly avoid direct travel to Iran, but it may also be wise to avoid travel to neighboring areas like Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf hubs. These are currently not dangerous areas, but given their close proximity to Iran, conditions could change rapidly.

Airlines have already canceled and rerouted flights to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel that fly over Iranian airspace, citing concerns over security, according to VisaHQ.

How to Approach Travel

Beyond military positioning and government-issued warnings, the biggest risk to travelers right now is unpredictability. No one is sure how this situation will progress, so it is important to stay informed about the region’s latest news.

Before booking or departing for a trip in this area, check government travel advisories for the latest advice, and make sure flights and accommodations are flexible and refundable.

Even if your destination is a Gulf hub that is normally considered safe, travelers should remain cautious, especially near waters where U.S. naval forces are stationed.

It is still unclear how the situation will unfold, but travelers can protect themselves through staying informed, keeping plans flexible and exercising caution.
