A two-day strike that started on Thursday at Munich International Airport (MUC) has left about 80 percent of its flights canceled, stranding travelers as the service workers strike for better wages and working conditions.
According to the Associated Press, Germany’s second-largest airport might still cancel more flights as the strike continues today.
The strike, which includes ground handlers and public sector workers, began on Thursday when they walked off the job. Public sector workers at Hamburg Airport also walked off the job, but their strike hasn’t led to cancellations, excepting the ones flying to and from Munich.
The strike is expected to end at midnight local time today, Friday, February 28.
The Munich Airport website issued a statement for travelers heading to the airport, announcing that the trade union Ver.di, which represents workers from several companies, issued the strike, stating that “A considerable impact on transport operations is to be expected. Passengers are therefore strongly advised to check the current flight status with their airline before traveling to the airport.”
According to current data from FlightAware, Munich Airport has the most cancellations today, with 212 canceled departures and 168 canceled arrivals, which both represent 52 percent and 41 percent of the airport’s flights, respectively. Hamburg Airport has reported cancelling 22 flights today, with a few delays.
