Ottawa has updated travel advisories for five European countries, warning Canadians that Russia's war in Ukraine is creating security risks beyond Ukraine's borders.
On July 22, Global Affairs Canada revised its travel advice for Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania and Slovakia, adding new information about airspace violations and military debris linked to the ongoing conflict. The risk levels for all five countries remain unchanged at "Take normal security precautions," but travellers are being advised to remain alert and follow local authorities' instructions.
The updated advisories note that objects associated with the war in Ukraine, including drones, have entered the airspace of several neighbouring countries and that military debris has fallen in various locations. Canadian officials warn that similar incidents could occur again.

The advisories also caution travellers that the security situation could lead to disruptions, including border closures or restrictions, flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures.
What changed by country
Latvia
The advisory now warns that drones and other objects from the conflict in Ukraine have passed through Latvian airspace and that military debris has landed in various locations. It also notes that balloons associated with smuggling operations originating in Belarus have illegally entered Latvian airspace. Travellers are encouraged to register for Latvia's "112 Latvia" emergency warning system and follow official alerts.
Estonia
Canada added a similar warning that drones connected to the war have entered Estonian airspace and that military debris has fallen in the country. Travellers are advised to monitor Estonia's "EE-Alarm" public warning system, download the "Ole Valmis!" emergency preparedness app and follow instructions from local authorities, including air raid sirens if activated.
Finland
The advisory now includes information about airspace violations and the possibility of military debris linked to the conflict crossing into Finnish territory. Canadians are advised to stay aware of their surroundings, monitor official information sources and be prepared for transportation disruptions, including flight cancellations or temporary airspace restrictions. Travellers are advised to monitor Emergency Response Centre Agency Finland - 112 Suomi.
Lithuania
Lithuania's advisory was updated with similar warnings that drones and other objects related to the conflict could enter Lithuanian airspace and that military debris may fall within the country. Travellers are advised to follow official emergency alerts and remain prepared for possible disruptions to transportation and border operations.
Slovakia
Canada also added new guidance for Slovakia warning that the conflict in Ukraine may affect the country's airspace and transportation networks. Travellers are advised to remain vigilant, monitor local media and follow instructions from Slovak authorities should security conditions change.
Global Affairs Canada advises Canadians travelling anywhere in the region to monitor local news, remain aware of their surroundings and check official travel advisories regularly, as security conditions can change with little notice.
