The Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) is closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa as a Hurricane Warning remains in effect for the island. Current forecasts indicate the storm will pass to the west of Bermuda on Thursday evening, bringing deteriorating conditions later today.

“Bermuda is highly experienced in preparing for and managing storm activity,” the BTA said in a statement. “The island has a strong track record of resilience thanks to rigorous building standards, well-established emergency protocols, and coordinated response teams.”

The Bermuda Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO), in partnership with government agencies, utilities, and community stakeholders, is actively preparing to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors.

Officials warn that strong winds, hazardous seas, and dangerous rip currents are expected to develop as the storm moves west of the island. In response, several precautionary measures are being implemented:

  • The Causeway will close at 10 p.m. on Thursday, October 30.
  • Ferry service will be suspended on select routes Thursday evening and fully halted on Friday until conditions improve.

At this time, L.F. Wade International Airport remains open, though travellers are advised that flight delays and cancellations are occurring. The airport may close later this evening as the storm intensifies.

Travellers should contact their airline or travel provider to confirm flight status and make any necessary changes.

The BTA also reminded visitors currently on the island—or those with upcoming travel plans—to reach out directly to their airlines, travel providers, hotels, or local businesses for updates. The Bermuda Hotel Association’s “Hurricane Guarantee” allows for penalty-free cancellations and, in some cases, complimentary stays for travellers affected by hurricanes.

The authority encourages travellers and industry stakeholders to follow official updates at GoToBermuda.com and through the BTA’s social media channels. Those currently on island should tune into the emergency radio broadcast at 100.1 FM for further information.
