Spanish hotel group RIU opened the doors at its first Canadian property in Toronto’s entertainment district. The 4-star hotel is housed in a newly-built, twin skyscraper building. Each tower is 49 storeys. The 352-room hotel sits on 23 storeys in one tower with the bulk of the project dedicated to housing.
To blend in with the neighbouring 18th century buildings, the base of the new construction has a facade of matching brick. The upper portion of the building is a glass structure, adding “a modern and contemporary element.”

The hotel has conference rooms for meetings of up to 40 people, a 24 hour fitness centre, a lobby bar and second floor restaurant. RIU’s signature breakfast buffet is included in the room rate.
In line with RIU’s commitment to sustainability, the hotel operates “advanced energy efficiency measures”, such as cogeneration plants that create electricity and thermal energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Water saving measures and waste reduction schemes are also in place.

Canada is one of the most significant markets for RIU, especially in destinations like the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America and the brand felt expanding into Canada was a strong choice given it is already familiar to many travellers here.
According to the announcement, the RIU Plaza Toronto is the twelfth hotel in RIU’s urban line, joining those in Panama, Guadalajara (Mexico), Madrid, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Berlin, London and Dublin. RIU is still expanding in the world’s largest cities and is currently building its third hotel in New York.
