Adventure travel is officially no longer niche.

In addition to an increasing number of North American travelers (64 percent)  saying they’re “open to adventure” travel, this style of exploring the world now represents a $188 billion market in North America and $1.16 trillion globally, according to a new report from the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA).

At the same time, it seems adventure travel is becoming more accessible, expanding well beyond the long-held stereotypes of high-octane activities only (think: heli-skiing, mountain climbing and the like), to include cultural exploration, personal growth and visits to iconic sites.

In other words, the very definition of adventure travel is changing.

“It is no longer defined narrowly by extreme or high-adrenalin pursuits, but by a wide spectrum of experiences,” explains the ATTA report, which says the new model of adventure travel is “energetic yet accessible.”

“Adventure travel has undergone a profound transformation in the past decade,” continues the report. “Today’s adventurers are curious and intentional, seeking immersive experiences that forge meaningful connections with nature, culture, and place.”

In this new era of adventure travel, activities like biking, hiking, and kayaking remain popular pursuits. But adventure travelers also want authentic cuisine, exposure to local traditions and the opportunity to learn the stories of the people they meet along the way, says ATTA.

U.S. travelers are driving much of the growth and evolution, contributing significant outbound volume and overall spend, while Canadian travelers are driving what the ATTA report calls the “depth” of the growth now unfolding in the segment.

“Canadian travelers show particularly strong alignment with cultural immersion, off-season travel, and sustainability-oriented behaviors,” says the ATTA report.

Four travel segments define adventure travel

The ATTA report identifies four distinct travel segments that it says make up today’s various styles of adventure travel. They include adventure intensives, nature enthusiasts, cultural explorers and experience samplers.

Among North American adventure travelers, cultural travelers are the largest demographic at 24 percent, while adventure intensives and experience samplers make up 14 percent each of the adventure travel demographic. Nature enthusiasts are close behind at 12 percent.

Adventure intensives

Concentrated among 26-45 years old, largely full-time employed and middle to upper-income. “This segment has both the financial capacity and the lifestyle stability to invest in meaningful adventure travel,” says the report.

As for the destinations attracting the adventure intensives - American travelers are largely headed to Canada (39 percent), while 34 percent of Canadian travelers say they’re focused on visiting the United States.

The Caribbean also ranks high, which the report says shows a demand for warm-weather trips that blend adventure and relaxation.

Nature Enthusiasts

This style of traveler skews 26 to 64 years old, employed full-time and largely married or living with a partner. The destinations that attract nature enthusiasts balance what ATTA says is “proximity and aspiration.

“Canada and the United States cross-border travel lead intent, followed by the Caribbean and Western Europe, while selective interest in Central America and emerging regions suggests measured exploration within familiar, well-connected markets,” says the report.

Cultural explorers

These adventure travelers are mature, 46- to 65-ear olds and are female dominated. This segment represents established travelers “with time flexibility, life experience, and discretionary income to prioritize culturally enriching trips,” says the report.

These travelers have a strong interest in iconic natural and cultural sites, and prefer heritage-rich destinations that offer “depth, meaning and global recognition."

Destinations favored by this travel segment include Western Europe, followed by the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

Experience samplers

Finally, the experience samplers, a group of travelers ranging in age from 26 to 64, these globetrotters skew male predominantly. They are largely working full-time, are middle to upper-middle income and are financially active travelers in their peak career years.

The experience seeking adventure traveler is focused on exploration, followed by personal growth and cultural immersion indicating “a desire for active trips th afforest meaning and self-improvement."

As for where they’re traveling? Western Europe is leading their travel plans, followed by Canada, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Central America.
