The electricity issues plaguing Cuba have mostly been resolved, reports Reuters, with much of Havana being reconnected by Sunday night.

Much of the island nation experienced a blackout, starting Friday night, which shuttered businesses and restaurants in the capital. It started when a substation in Havana experienced a short in a transmission line.

More than 10 million people spent the weekend without power, a consequence of Cuba’s aging power grid, which relies on oil-fired plants, which according to Reuters have been struggling even more since oil imports from Venezuela, Russia and Mexico decreased last year.

This the fourth electricity grid collapse in Cuba since October 2024. You can read more at Storms and Loss of Power: Cuba's Conditions Deteriorate.

Visitors to Cuba should be aware of on-going power shortages, according to the Government of Canada’s travel advisory for the country. The advisory notes that many resorts have generators to rely on during power outages, although they may not be able to maintain service for an extended period.
