Intrepid Travel is expanding its rail offerings with six new trips added to its train travel portfolio.

The new itineraries span Asia, Africa, Europe and North America, and range from 9 to 11 days.

The trips take travellers through Vietnam, China, Laos, Malaysia, Kenya, Northern Sweden and Eastern Canada — all via public rail networks, without internal flights.

Since launching its dedicated rail range in 2024, Intrepid says it has seen a 24% year-over-year increase in bookings for train-based itineraries.

“Rail travel has taken off in the past couple of years and for good reason,” said Erica Kritikides, GM of Experiences at Intrepid Travel.

“In a world that feels like it’s always going at full steam, rail travel provides ease, convenience and a slower pace.”

Among the newly launched itineraries:

Kenya by Rail: Trains, Safari and Beaches (10 days / CAD $7,456)
Travellers ride the Madaraka Express through two national parks, with the chance to spot zebras and elephants along the way.

Malaysia’s Jungle Railway (10 days / CAD $3,117)
This journey winds through remote areas of Malaysia, surrounded by jungle and dramatic limestone cliffs.

China & Laos: Kunming to Bangkok by Rail (11 days / CAD $3,578)
The route includes the first cross-border bullet train connecting China and Laos, followed by an overnight train into Thailand.

Vietnam & China – Hanoi to Kunming by Rail (11 days / CAD $3,117)
Travellers cross northern Vietnam into China, visiting the Sapa region, Shangri-La, and hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Northern Sweden by Rail (9 days / CAD $4,815)
A trip through Abisko National Park and Arctic tundra, with stops in remote villages near the polar circle.

Eastern Canada by Rail (10 days / CAD $5,989)
Starting in Toronto, this itinerary includes visits to Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, and the Thousand Islands region.

Each trip is led by a local Intrepid guide to help navigate complex rail routes and encourage cultural exchange along the way. Group sizes average 10 to 12 people, offering what the company describes as “community, conversation, and a sense of connection.”

“The latest additions to our popular rail range are some of our most exciting yet,” said Kritikides.

“They traverse both iconic and lesser-known routes and provide access to new places and experiences. As with all the trips in our rail range, there are no internal flights and the majority of travel is done by train, reflecting our long-term product development plans to leave lighter tracks.”

With the additions, Intrepid’s rail collection now includes 50 global trips.
