Air Transat is updating its Caribbean schedules as a result of the impact that Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria have had on the region.
Air Transat has suspended flights to Sint Maarten (SXM) for the entire Winter 2017/2018 season as the dual-nation island recovers. Sint Maarten, which was hit especially hard by Hurricane Irma, sustained significant wind damage, flooding and widespread power outages. The island's main airport, Princess Juliana International Airport, closed after suffering significant damage from the storm, which destroyed part of the terminal, safety fences and aircraft. On October 10, 2017, SXM welcomed the return of commercial operations, albeit using temporary facilities.
"We had to make temporary provisions for our departure and arrival operations," said Michel Hyman, COO and acting CEO of the airport.
Air Transat did not announce when it plans to resume service to Sint Maarten, but did announce that they intend to restart service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with one flight per week from Toronto, and one flight per week from Montreal, as of February 18, 2017.
Puerto Rico was hit hard by Hurricane Maria, with the US territory losing all power and communications following the storm.
With Sint Maarten and Puerto Rico off the schedule, albeit temporarily, Air Transat is expanding service to some of its more popular Caribbean destinations including Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Montego Bay, Cayo Largo, Holguin, Mexican destinations like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, and Tampa, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
