WestJet has cancelled its planned flights from Calgary International Airport (YYC) and New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA), according to Simple Flying, despite having only announced the route in January.
Initially scheduled to operate once weekly from May 24 to August 30, 2025, the route was intended to complement WestJet's existing daily, year-round flights between Calgary and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
This decision aligns with a broader trend of reduced transborder flights between Canada and the U.S.
Canadian airlines are reevaluating their route offerings to align with evolving passenger preferences.
As previously reported, Air Canada is making cuts of its own, notably out of Vancouver. Over the summer, route frequency will be reduced from daily service to Washington, D.C to five times weekly. On the Houston-Intercontinental route, service will fall from daily to six times weekly, while Vancouver-Miami shifts from four weekly flights to three.
Recent data indicates that, compared to the previous week (March 17 to March 23), airlines on both sides of the border have removed 61 weekly flights on Canada-U.S. routes scheduled for summer 2025.
Flair cancelled its route from Toronto Pearson to Nashville, while seasonal flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor and Calgary, as well as Edmonton, will conclude earlier than anticipated. The Vancouver to Phoenix route will also end on April 22, 2025. The Vancouver to Las Vegas route will be discontinued in mid-June.
Factors contributing to the shift include political tensions, unfavourable exchange rates, and concerns over U.S. trade policies.
