Waiting at the gate for a recent flight, I heard pings on phones pepper through the crowd as the notification went out — this flight is delayed. Twenty minutes later, the departure was pushed back again. By the time the third delay notification went out, the worry that the flight would be cancelled had settled firmly in my stomach. And of course it eventually was.

Passengers flying on Flair Airlines and Air Transat last month faced no such scenarios, as both airlines achieved an impressive zero percent cancellation rate. The industry-leading completion rate was unmatched by any other North American airline. Globally, only Royal Jordanian was able to boast a similar statistic.

Completion rate and on-time performance (OTP) are two of the key metrics on which airlines compete. Flair markets itself as Canada’s Most Reliable Airline and offers passengers an on-time guarantee, distributing vouchers for those affected by delays. According to data from OAG, Flair was September’s most reliable airline in all of North America (ninth in the world) when its 89.13% OTP was factored in.

Air Transat, which operated 2082 flights in September, compared with Flair’s 2226, fared worse in the rankings due to its OTP of 77.04%. Those statistics placed it at 17th in North America, well behind Porter (fifth), WestJet (sixth) and trailing Air Canada (14th).
