Porter Dispatchers Vote 100% to Strike

The Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association (CALDA) announced that its membership at Porter Airlines have voted 100 percent in favour of strike action. 

The unanimous vote followed 14 months of negotiating with their employer for a contract.

In a statement, CALDA expressed deep concern that, in preparation for potential labour disruptions, Porter has begun training a small number of non-unionized personnel as potential substitutes for 35 certified Dispatchers. CALDA deemed the move “unsafe, irresponsible, and disrespectful to both employees and the traveling public.”

CALDA is the union that represents the certified flight dispatchers at Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet, Porter Airlines, Jazz Aviation, PAL Airlines, and Canadian North. "These are certified aviation professionals whose expertise directly impacts the safety of every flight. They deserve a contract that reflects the value of their work," said Rob King, National President of CALDA.

The statement to the press indicated that negotiations are currently in the final stages of Conciliation with the support of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. 

If negotiations remain unsuccessful, job action could take place in the new year.
